Media Effects Workshop in London, Monday 16 June 2014

On June 16th 2014, the Media Effects Research project will come to a close with a concluding workshop, to which we are pleased to invite interested individuals to attend (online registration here).

The workshop will take place from 12:30-4:30pm, Monday 16 June 2014 at NatCen Social Research, Northampton Square London, EC1V 0AX, London.

The goal of our project—which has been funded by the British Economic & Social Research Council (ESRC)—has been to study the role of the media in present-day electoral politics. For example, we have studied the effects media content has on turnout in the European elections, as well as the relationship between media content and voters’ preferences for political parties in the UK general elections. In particular, we explored to what extent these effects can be attributed to methodological choices as well as context-specific factors such as institutional arrangements, media-systems, eras, or event characteristics.

During this afternoon, our research team will present the main findings of our research and there will be a round table discussion on Media, Politics and Accountability in representative democracies. For this discussion we will be joined by representatives from non-governmental organizations working in media and politics.

The schedule of the workshop is as follows:

  • 12:30 – 1:30     Lunch
  • 1:30 – 1:50       Three Approaches to Gauging Media Effects in the UK Elections, Susan Banducci, Dan Stevens and Martijn Schoonvelde
  • 1:50 – 2:10        Generalizing the Study of Media Effects, Jason Barabas and Jennifer Jerit
  • 2:10 – 2:30        The Information Environment and Participation, Susan Banducci and Martijn Schoonvelde
  • 2:30 – 3:00        Testing Media Exposure in the Lab, Jennifer Jerit and Jason Barabas
